BMW N54 Tuning Basics – What You Need To Know

Let’s be honest. The BMW 335i is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to performance and to us tuning enthusiasts, it seems as though the sky is the limit. Whether your car is equipped with the N54 or N55 turbocharged motors, a simple remap on a relatively stock car can yield power gains anywhere between 70-100hp alone! That’s pretty damn impressive considering how inexpensive these cars have become. Okay enough of me rambling on about the absurd power capabilities of the N54/N55 engines, let’s get into the raw details and explain step by step, what you need to do to tune your turbo BMW!

  1. First and foremost, the most important thing to make sure of before you even get tuned is to make sure that your car is in a proper state to handle the extra power. Maintenance before mods is key here and trust me when I say this (I learned the hard way). What I mean by this is to check your car’s ignition system and make sure everything is up to par. This generally means new spark plugs and coil packs, along with making sure your injectors are good. I would also recommend to make sure your intake valves have been walnut blasted & clear of carbon deposits. The reason I specify with these parts over others is due to the fact misfiring is probably the most common issue people experience when tuning their BMW, and doing this preventative checkup can help to ensure you will not run into this.

  2. Okay, now that we have done our maintenance checkup it’s time to get into the fun stuff. With the N54/N55 there are many options when concerning tuning hardware, however I have decided to focus on MHD as it’s arguably the most user friendly and is what I use on my 335i. On a side note, MHD is an app available on Android devices only so you’ll need a proper Android compatible tablet or smartphone to run the app. I recommend the Lenovo Tab 4 as it’s what I currently use and mutually serves as a nice affordable device. Once you have downloaded MHD you will need to purchase the flasher module as well as whichever stage map packs you will want to flash onto the car.

  3. Now it’s time for the hardware you’ll need. Fortunately it’s pretty simple as all that is needed are two cables. One being a K+DCAN cable and the other being a simple USD-OTG cable as well. The USB-OTG cable serves as an adapter to the K+DCAN so you can connect your Android device to it and the K+DCAN cable plugs into your cars OBD port to access the DME. It’s also heavily important to note that a battery charger will come in very handy for all tuning operations. You do not want your car’s battery to die while flashing as that can create a whole new set of issues.

  4. Once you’ve connected everything together go ahead and load up MHD on your device and purchase the flasher module if you haven’t done so already. Following this, you can now select which off the shelf “stage” map packs you would like to purchase and flash onto the car. Once you have purchased the desired map pack go ahead and close all doors, turn off all lights in the car, and set your Android device on airplane mode. Then, switch the ignition of the car to the on setting without starting the engine. When you begin the flashing process MHD will ask your transmission selection as well as fuel type so be sure to input the correct choices and from there you can also edit certain parameters of the car’s function such as exhaust burble, cooling, cold start noise reduction, etc. The entire flash process should normally take around 30min or so especially if it is your first time and expect a myriad of warning lights and errors to pop up on the dash/iDrive screen. Once the flash is complete go ahead and switch the ignition off, remove the cables, and disconnect your battery charger. From there go out and enjoy your newly tuned turbocharged BMW!
